An alligator seen swimming in a retention pond in The Woodlands is causing concern for some residents.

The Houston Chronicle reports Hughes Landing security footage captured the alligator swimming in the pond Wednesday morning.

Some people who live near the pond are concerned about their children and pets. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department spokeswomanLauren Peace says it's not unusual to see alligators in suburban areas, but they usually stay hidden.

She advises people to keep a safe distance if they see an alligator and not to provoke them.

Alligators caught on tape swimming in suburban ponds are becoming more common as their range expands, but that doesn't mean they're necessarily safe.

4. Retention pond near The Woodlands full of alligators

Residents in the area surrounding The Woodlands, TX were alarmed to find a retention pond near their neighborhood teeming with alligators. The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office confirmed that the pond had become a popular spot for alligators due to the recent heat wave. Alligators are known to be drawn to areas where there is easy prey, such as small animals or livestock, and the recent hot weather has provided plenty of opportunity for them to search out food. The Constable's Office warned residents to avoid contact with alligators and to keep their pets away from the water.

Alligator sightings are not unusual in this area, but usually they are seen further away from populated areas. This retention pond is located close to several neighborhoods, so it is especially important for people living nearby to take precautions against coming into contact with these dangerous animals. It is also important for pet owners to keep their animals penned up or on a leash when outside, as alligators have been known to snatch up dogs and cats.

While fatalities caused by alligators are rare in the United States, there have been a number of serious attacks in recent years. Alligator attacks can be very violent and can cause serious injury or death. As long as residents take basic precautions, they should be safe from these predators.

5. Alligators spotted in Cypress Creek

Residents of the Cypress Creek subdivision were in for a rude awakening Tuesday morning when they discovered alligators in their neighborhood. One alligator was even seen swimming in a resident's pool.

Warren Binford, a resident of Cypress Creek, said she was coming outside to take her dog for a walk when she saw an alligator in her neighbor's pool.

"I screamed and my husband came running out and we called 911," said Binford.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office responded to the call and set up a barricade around the subdivision while they attempted to catch the alligators. A representative from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department was also called to help with the catch.

After two hours of attempting to catch the alligators, both animals had finally been caught and removed from the neighborhood.

Binford said she was happy that the alligators had been caught but was concerned about what could have happened if they hadn't been caught.

"What if there were small children or pets outside at the time? They could have easily been hurt or killed," said Binford.

Alligators have been known to attack people, especially small children and pets. It is important to be aware of your surroundings when you are out near any water source where alligators may be present. If you see an alligator, do not attempt to touch or feed it and please call authorities immediately.
